a pirate's life

It's pretty easy to see why Nancy would choose a pirate's life vs. her "imprisonment" through marriage. How rotten of her brothers as well as her father to treat her as if she is a form of merchandise that can be sold! I'd run away, too!

Well,
That's also kind of the time the book is set in. That's the way women were TREATED back then, and it's not entirely her family's fault. That doesn't make it right, but it's kind of also not WRONG if they don't know any better. It's also, I think, very much the fault of her stepmother (I am remembering that right, right? She DID have a stepmother?) for not treating her like a human being. She was treated very well by her dad and brothers before the woman stepped in.

Yea, she did have a stepmother.

The only people whe really knew that this stuff was wrong the young women who didnt think that they were less than men. But when they got older and conformed to society... they too believed that they werent equal. It really is sad that women were treated that way, but I think women also thought that that was what needed to be done, so they were happy.

Her stepmother was pretty harsh... I think her dad should have said no to some things. He tried to resist at first, but then he just gave in and left everyone to her judgment. I think the absence of the father on the house kind of drove Nancy's brother to drink and gamble. It's really sad.
